The first State Fair of Texas that I can remember attending was in 1946 when I was 9 years old. I lived on Cordova Street in northeast Dallas, and I caught a streetcar and went to the fair by myself. In those days it was perfectly safe for a youngster to do that. The streetcar stopped right in front of the fair entrance. World War II had just ended, and inside the Parry street entrance I was bedazzled by the many army tanks, canons, machine guns and other military items on exhibit. I spent a lot of time excitedly exploring the insides of those tanks. There was even a huge, tall, captured German V-2 rocket pointing skyward. Near the Cotton Bowl, a man with a huge telescope charged 25 cents to look at the moon. I was fascinated by what I saw and was inspired to become an amateur astronomer myself, which I still am today. 1946 was also the first year that I remember seeing Elsie the cow and her calf Beauregard. They were on display in the Old Mill building, the one with the water wheel.

As a grandmother now, I have fond memories of going to the fair on student day for our school. We picked up every brochure anyone had to offer and took bags home to Mom and Dad. They were quite excited to know that every vender in Dallas would be calling or sending us information on their products.
Of course, the food is fantastic! Especially the corny dogs. They don't taste as good anywhere else.
Loved the bird show. Fascinating. Just walking the fair on a fall evening with lights and sounds and smells of good fun, was so much excitement for me growing up. My son and his wife had their first date to the fair and go every year after.
